The Benefits of Training with Resistance Bands
It has been documented since the 1980s that the use of resistance bands — loop or otherwise — offers significant benefits for a wide range of individuals, from young athletes to the active elderly.
What the Research Shows
Long-standing research has shown that there are similar strength gains when comparing traditional weights (dumbbells or ankle weights) with resistance bands of varying types. This allows physical and fitness trainers, coaches, and physiotherapists to find innovative ways to target the specific muscles that need addressing — making bands a truly versatile tool in any clinical or training setting.
Documented benefits include:
Increased muscle activation
Increased strength and endurance
Gains in muscle toning
Improved functional capacity for movement
Overall improved quality of life
Understanding the Length–Tension Relationship
A common concern when choosing and using elastic bands is the uncertainty around how much additional load or weight the bands provide during an exercise — otherwise known as the length–tension relationship. This refers to how much tension (i.e. load) is provided when the band is stretched to a particular or its fullest length.
The thicker or broader the resistance band, the greater the resistance it provides, meaning greater loading capacity and, in essence, a higher difficulty level. Conversely, the thinner the band, the less resistance or load it provides, meaning less difficulty.
“Individual resistance band brands are typically sold in colour-coded sets — with black generally being the heaviest and yellow the lightest, though this can vary by brand.”
Versatility for Home and Studio Use
Getting to a standard gym for weight training can be a challenge, and that's where resistance bands really shine. They can be used easily at home for both upper and lower body exercises, making them accessible regardless of your schedule or location.
At PhysioCare, we incorporate resistance bands into both our physiotherapy and our Pilates sessions, where we use them to increase the challenge of standard workouts and enhance overall gains. We also carry loop bands and heavy duty resistance bands at our storefront to suit your specific needs.
Who Can Benefit?
Depending on your physical activity level — whether you're a young athlete or an active elderly individual — resistance bands can be utilised in creative and innovative ways to help you reach your desired fitness goals. Their adaptability makes them one of the most practical and cost-effective tools in both rehabilitation and fitness training.
