Shoulder Pain? Your Biceps Could Be the Cause
Shoulder pain is a common complaint, so by extension, shoulder joint dysfunction or osteoarthritis can be blamed for the pain as standard, instead of the tissues or muscles that are associated with this joint. Several muscles, tendons, and ligaments cross the shoulder joint, and the biceps muscle is one of these.
The Role of the Biceps in Shoulder Function
The biceps is responsible primarily for elbow movement, but it also has some role in the stabilisation of the shoulder. In this way, if the biceps muscle becomes injured at its shoulder attachment — as with a tear or strain — or becomes overloaded from repetitive activity, such as weight-lifting, shoulder pain can result. Additionally, undetected inflammation of either of the two upper tendons of the biceps can be a cause of shoulder pain.
Beyond Medication: Finding and Treating the True Cause of Your Shoulder Pain
Medical management may involve the prescription of anti-inflammatory medication or steroid injections to ease shoulder pain, however, at Physiocare we aim to get to the true cause of the pain mechanism.
Our methods of examination and hands-on treatment help to expose the underlying causes of pain, for example as with biceps involvement. In this way, we work on the muscle recovering its role in the support of the shoulder joint. We have great results, inclusive of the corrective exercise prescriptions given and uncovering aggravating factors, so that our patients can return to doing their activities of daily living as accustomed.
