What Does that Knee Pain mean?

Knee pain is a common complaint that we see in the clinic. You will find that more women than men get knee pain.

Pain in the knees can affect you at any age or stage during your life.

It is important not to ignore it.

If ignored it can get worse with time.

The worst case scenario is that pain left unattended, can lead to the need for joint replacement.

So, let's avoid surgery if we can.

Learn what is making your knee(s) hurt.

Some of the reasons for knee pain can be due to an injury, overuse or even arthritis.

Luckily, these conditions respond to physiotherapy treatment.

Pain from an injury can result from strain of the ligaments or muscles around the knee. It can also be as a result of injury to the internal structures of the knee joint e.g. meniscus or cartilage

In the case of overuse of the joint, this can occur due to muscles above or below the knee not working. This results in excess load on the knee which should be better distributed.

The pain from arthritis can change although the pathology doesn't change. How the joint responds or works improves with treatment.

By strengthening the right muscles you can improve the loading bearing and sharing.

Delaying assessment by a physiotherapist can increase the likelihood of surgical intervention.

Since the knee can suffer from different types of injury, you need to have an assessment to find out the cause. Don't guess.

You should not have to live with chronic pain.
