Orthopaedic physiotherapy in St. Michael Barbados

What is Orthopaedic
Physiotherapy?

Orthopaedic physiotherapy is the specialised assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting your muscles, joints, bones, ligaments, and tendons. It is the branch of physiotherapy most directly concerned with how your body moves — and what's stopping it from moving well.

At PhysioCare, we combine clinical expertise with a deep understanding of how women's bodies change through perimenopause and beyond. Hormonal shifts, reduced bone density, and changing muscle mass all influence how we experience pain and recover from injury — and our approach is fully tailored to reflect that.

Whether you're recovering from surgery, managing a chronic joint condition, or dealing with a sudden injury, orthopaedic physiotherapy offers a clear, structured, and deeply personal path back to full function.

  • Orthopaedic physiotherapy treats anything related to the musculoskeletal system of the body. This includes muscles, joints and bones e.g. back pain

  • This type of physiotherapy is specific to the musculoskeletal system and does not deal with other areas of physiotherapy which include neurological conditions or respiratory conditions. General physiotherapy is not specialised and encompasses all aspects of physiotherapy.

  • A doctor’s referral is not necessary to access physiotherapy services unless you wish you medical insurance to cover part of the cost of the visits.

  • At your first visit you will be asked questions regarding your condition and also any previous injuries or illnesses. You will be assessed by your therapist and provided with a working diagnosis. Together with your therapist you will be provided a treatment plan in keeping with your objectives and long term goal for physiotherapy.

At the initial consultation you will be giving the likely duration of treatment based on your stage of healing and condition along with the prescribed frequency to achieve your goals.

In this first session please ensure that you wear loose and comfortable clothing so that the therapist has easy access to the area that requires treatment.

Depending on the nature of your condition, whether you have been dealing with pain recently or for a long time you will receive some treatment at this first session as well. In some cases when the pain is chronic and understanding of the cause of the issue means that treatment may be delayed to the following session. Please let your therapist know what is your priority at the start of the session so that the y are aware of your expectations as this will help to shape the flow of the session.

  • This can vary depending on your injury or condition and the length of time that you have been dealing with it. Many times you have some relief in the initial sessions, however, unless you continue with the treatment plan these results may be transient.

  • There are times that conservative measures such as physiotherapy can work to the extent that surgery is no longer needed. Even in those cases where surgery is needed the patient is in a better physical condition before the surgery because of physiotherapy.

  • Yes, in fact it is ideal for older women or those with osteoporosis to help with mobility and encourage greater bone density through safe weight-bearing activities.

  • Yes, orthopaedic physiotherapy can utilise both acupuncture and Pilates to give the best overall results.

  • In the initial assessment the physiotherapist will assess the source of the problem and will indicate a treatment plan only if orthopaedic physiotherapy will be beneficial. Otherwise they can refer you to another medical practitioner that may be more suitable to work with you and your condition.
