How Acupuncture Helped Restore the Sense of Well-being for Migraines
After close to ten years of debilitating migraines, Maria came to Physiocare looking for answers. What followed was a transformation that went far beyond pain relief.
The Challenge
For years, Maria — a marketing manager in her mid-twenties — experienced close to ten years of debilitating migraines. Episodes would affect her weekly for days at a time, and also monthly, aggravated by stress, lack of sleep, gym activity, or something as simple as a missed meal. The condition — presenting with aura, sound and light sensitivity — would often force her to abandon day-to-day normal activity entirely and retreat to a silent, dark space for comfort.
Despite having investigations like a CT scan of the brain, strong formal medication like Relpax, and lifestyle changes, the pain and unpredictability of the symptoms persisted. Over time, this built a level of anxiety around whether or not simple daily tasks would become intolerable.
"When a migraine is on it can be as high as a 5–8 out of 10! I just have to drop whatever I'm doing to find relief, and with my type of work — that has been difficult."
— Maria
Our Approach at PhysioCare
Maria's plan of care at PhysioCare began with a comprehensive assessment to understand her triggers and stress patterns, followed by a musculoskeletal examination including posture, range of motion, muscle power, and palpable tension. She had been referred by her Neurologist specifically for acupuncture, but rather than treating the symptoms of her migraine alone, our goal was to restore balance in her nervous and musculoskeletal systems through a truly comprehensive approach.
Her individualised interventions included cervical spine mobilisation aimed at resetting the neural exits and reducing a 'flight' scenario; desensitization of the affected tissues aimed at creating better and balanced movement patterns; acupuncture sessions with points chosen to focus on tension relief, circulation, and nervous system regulation with a migraine focus; corrective exercise to address imbalances in the head, neck, and shoulder; and Pillowise ergonomic pillow support to address head, neck, and shoulder tension while in a restful state.
This integrative approach was designed to address both the source and the evolution of Maria's migraines around her activities of daily living — not simply manage them when they struck.
The Transformation
Within three weeks, Maria noticed fewer and less intense migraine episodes — even around her usual triggers. There was less reliance on migraine medication and a better ability to handle activities of daily living with confidence and comfort. The shift she described was simple but profound: being able to live — rather than recover.
"It's the first time in years that I've felt in control of my migraines. Acupuncture has been life-changing, and I appreciate how my Physiotherapist helps me understand what's happening in my body and how to manage it."
