Is Pilates for Me? A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started

At the moment, Pilates has blown up in popularity around the world. It has quickly become a household name. For many, they are unsure how to be a part of what seems to be a new fitness craze. Many people are asking themselves: is Pilates for me, how do I know, and where should I start?

Choosing the Right Studio and Instructor

Your experience of Pilates will be affected by the class or instructor that you choose. Ensure that the studio has instructors who are certified in Matwork Pilates, which is the foundation — even if you want to use equipment such as the Reformer. Matwork forms the basis of Pilates, and any instructor with a strong foundation who is able to assist you will have had training in Matwork Pilates along with the Principles of the exercise system.

Before Your First Class

Once you have decided on where you want to try your first class, reach out to the studio to find out where it is and get to know the people there. This will make your first class less intimidating. Depending on your personality, you may also feel more comfortable with a tour of the studio. Make sure that the studio is aware of your goals and what you ultimately would like to achieve by attending Pilates. This will help them curate that first experience for you.

What to Expect in Your First Group Class

At the first group class, you will be introduced to your instructor and possibly some of the regulars in the class. You should have filled out a waiver prior to class so that the instructor is aware of any injuries or special considerations you may have. During your first class, you will be led through a set of exercises starting with a warm-up, then the main body of the exercise, and a cool-down. During this class, you will build awareness in your body and appreciate how it moves. Some exercises may seem challenging and can be modified for your level of fitness.

There are a lot of aspects to Pilates and it can be overwhelming if you do not give yourself the time to gradually get into this form of exercise. Know that with repetition, things will get easier while still maintaining the challenge that your body needs to get stronger and more flexible. So make sure you are giving yourself grace.

Pilates Is for Every Body

You can rest assured that Pilates is for every body. So even if you have an injury, there are ways in which Pilates can be modified to work around that injury if needed. When you start, you do not need to have a particular fitness level — especially in our classes that are beginner-friendly as well as multilevel. We encourage you to listen to your body and go at your own pace.

Matwork vs. Reformer Pilates

Matwork Pilates is done on a mat similar to those used for yoga, but just thicker. Reformer Pilates is done on a machine called the Reformer and uses spring tension to add resistance to Pilates exercises. Both types of Pilates are beginner-friendly and complement each other. If you have the opportunity to do both, I would highly recommend it.

What to Wear and Bring

When you attend your first session, make sure you have your hair tied up in a high bun so that it doesn’t stop you from lying flat. Having your hair pulled back will also decrease the likelihood of it getting caught in the machine during exercise. Wear form-fitting clothing, as it helps the instructor get a better look at what you are doing with your body during exercise.

You will also need to bring a towel. This is important to protect the Reformer machine from skin oils and grease. Reformers have special mats that can be purchased at our clinic for your convenience.

Wear socks with grips, as it helps with some positions on both the mat and the Reformer. And of course, do not forget to bring your water bottle. Most studios will only allow clear fluids on the studio floor to prevent any damage in the event of a spillage. In addition, footwear should be left at the entrance to the studio area.

How Quickly Will You See Results?

According to the famous quote by Joseph Pilates: “You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.” Honestly, from day one you will feel differently about your body, even if you are not able to explain it. Consistency of at least twice per week will help you to see your body changing more quickly.

The difference you feel is generally a lengthening in posture and a lightness to your step. You will feel greater mobility and ease of movement. Getting up and down off the floor will feel easier. If you are a gym person, you will find that you are able to lift heavier as your core stability improves. For runners, technique and posture when running will also improve. So basically, there is a lot to be said about starting a Pilates practice.
